Productivity tips from Girls in Tech

Like everyone else these days, we at Girls in Tech are adjusting to a new normal. For many of us, that means getting used to remote work and finding ways to stay productive at home. Below is a look at some of the tips and tricks we are using to get the most out of our work days.

Taking time for yourself. “I set aside an hour every day to reset my mind. Usually I spend this time doing some exercise or reading a book. There are a ton of free classes online now; I try to do a mix of yoga and live streams from Barry’s Bootcamp. Having some time for “me” every day really helps me to stay focused on in other areas and get the most out of the hours I spend working!” – Kate Drew, GIT Board Member

Following a regular schedule. “I get ready and seated on my desk at the same time every day and take regular and frequent breaks. I have realized I do better with frequent shorter breaks rather than one hour long lunch break. I use this to keep on top of to do items around the house, which helps immensely since I am a mom of two. Lastly, and most importantly, I definitely log out on time!” – Surabhi Bansal, GIT Board Member

Be intentional about re-purposing your commute time. “By getting back the hour and 20 minutes I would normally spend commuting each day, I’m able to make more time for things I enjoy but don’t always have time for, like cooking, reading, and catching up with friends. While I don’t enjoy being cooped up in my apartment, I am very appreciative to be able to do these things more frequently.” – Madeline Pieratti, GIT Board Member

Giving my “work” brain a rest. “When I just. can’t. even. with work or living in a small space, I turn to the kitchen. This is not a normal behavior for me, but during these strange times, I find using another part of my brain therapeutic. Something about cooking makes the apartment seem bigger and my options seem vaster. Two of my recent experiments were motivated by food expiry dates and size taken up in my fridge (I’m looking at you vegetables). I tried Barefoot Contessa’s Parmesan Fennel Gratin, which melts in your mouth and makes you forget you’re eating veggies. Next up was this flaky wonder, Skillet Phyllo Pie with Butternut Squash, Kale and Goat Cheese from Epicurious. It was savory and light and represented my first attempt at wrangling phyllo, so it got me out of my comfort zone.” – Denise Roy-Desrosiers, GIT Managing Director

Playing games that challenge you to think, and to sharpen your reflexes. “I set aside an hour every evening for action-packed gaming on my console, be it with friends or by myself. This jolts my brain out of isolation, and makes me think out of the box.” – Viral Sanghvi, GIT Board Member
